Just a few hours ago I received my new Hammerhead Karoo 2. I’ve actually been using it since the fall but that was a pre-release device and after taking part in the test group I sent it back and purchased a final edition. I’ve yet to ride with it (this am!) but a few quick notes as this is a very different type of device from other head units from companies like Garmin or Wahoo. By far the main difference is the connectivity and the Karoo 2 really stands apart here. Like other smart devices, you connect to wifi on launch and an updated firmware / OS downloads … this took a few minutes, and then on reboot, I signed into my Hammerhead account and let the magic take over. Through a quick sync all** my critical details were back on the device … profiles, bikes, cloud accounts (Strava, RideWithGPS, Kamoot, and Training Peaks) along with my previously saved routes and ride data. The asterisk above was for the more locally connected devices like my phone needing to be paired for notifications and the sensors from my two bikes and indoor trainer needing to be re=paired as well though this is a very standard and simple process. It’s pretty awesome when connected devices like this deliver. Having set up my share of Garmin devices this was by far the simplest to get going and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s ride! I also did a quick check on the Garmin quarter-turn mount adapter and it seems that the release version has a much tighter fit compared to the initial 3-Printed tester I’ve used until now. All in a very positive experience!
In what has to be the best story on the internet … ok perhaps after the cat lawyer, a 90yr old man’s plea to AT&T via two print ads to embarrass them has led to a fiber install replacing his horrific internet access!
When 90-year-old Aaron Epstein bought a Wall Street Journal print ad to complain about his slow AT&T Internet service, the impact was immediate. Reporters like me called him and wrote articles, talk of his plight went viral on the Internet, his ad made an appearance on Stephen Colbert's Late Show, TV networks interviewed him for nightly news broadcasts, and AT&T executives sprang into action to minimize the public-relations damage.
Chick Corea passed away this past week and my father just shared this great piece from the NYT which has curated a choice selection of tracks.
Before closing out this round, I thought I’d share another great story that Vice produced about Pizza, following your passions and family. It’s just great.
And lastly …
Pretty much right after I shared the last newsletter which ended with Putin’s Staying Alive RT Strut, this article from the FT popped up highlighting the remarkable wealth and opulence of certain political leaders. Apparently, this is one of Putin’s homes … normal stuff.
Great content- hadn’t heard about pizza story, or the 90 year old- the Colbert link is off though. It shows Colbert referring to him but nothing else.
